Seeing Ourselves as a New Creation Through the Eyes of God
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV)
“I’m just a sinner saved by grace” mumbled the woman with her head hung low. After making yet another mistake, she shook her head and whispered, “I can’t help it; that’s just how I am.”
These words are uttered by people overcome by their sin and in need of God’s power working in and through them because I proclaim you are not just a sinner saved by grace. You are a new creation. The old has passed away and you’ve been made new today.
1 John 3:9 reminds us, “The person who has been born into God’s family does not make a practice of sinning because now God’s life is in him; so he can’t keep on sinning, for this new life has been born into him and controls him—he has been born again” (TLB).
As a born again daughter of the living God, the Spirit of God is flowing through you, God’s seed remains in you, and you are a new creation. This does not mean you will never sin, but you just don’t make a practice of sinning.
Walking in the truth of God’s word is a lifelong process because we have been given the fruit of God’s Spirit in seed form. But John assures us “… that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2 NIV).
Until the day Jesus appears again, every day is an opportunity to water the seed of God so we can produce the fruit of God’s Spirit in our lives; things like “… love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control …” (Galatians 5:22-23 TLB).
As born again daughters of the living God, we can love the unlovely, choose joy and experience God’s peace when times are hard, and endure hardships knowing God walks with us. With the Spirit of God flowing through us, we can be kind and good when faced with evil and choose to be faithful when others are disloyal. As a new creation, we can use gentle words and operate in self-control when others are harsh and undisciplined.
God has given me His Son and made me a new creation.
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving me your Son and calling me a new creation. Help me to be controlled by Your Spirit and walk according to Your ways. Thank You for loving me when I sin and giving me Your empowering grace so I can overcome darkness with Your light. In Jesus’ precious Name, Amen.
“Therefore, since I am in Christ, I am a new creation: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17 personalized)
