As the end of 2013 wraps up, I have started thinking of my 2014 goals. One goal that has consistently been on my list is intentional Bible reading.
For far too many years reading God’s Word from cover to cover is something I didn’t think I could do. I would start the year reading my Bible every day, and then I would miss a day here and a day there until I would eventually give up and say “next year …”
Then in 2009 I joined Wendy Pope of Proverbs 31 Ministries as she led women in reading the The One Year Chronological Bible NLT. 2009 was the first time I read the entire Bible from cover the cover. I read through The One Year Chronological Bible both in 2009 and 2010, and then my husband took a turn to read it through too.
I enjoyed reading The One Year Chronological Bible, especially as I read David’s corresponding Psalms to the events in his life. There are days of “begets” and temple measurements, but there is always something to be gained from each day’s reading. For me the hardest part of reading the Chronological Bible are the days when you want to underline every other verse or you’re reading through the gospels, and it feels rushed.
So in 2011 I read the The One Year Bible NLT. Each day’s reading includes the Old Testament, the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs. For me this has been the perfect combination of reading, and you actually read through the Psalms twice.
In 2013 I switched Bibles again and now read The One Year Bible NIV. My regular Bible is an NIV, and I wanted my One Year Bible to be the same format so the familiar verses would be the same wording.
Reading the Bible every day has helped me grow in my walk with the Lord as I consistently pursue time in His presence. My goal is now my habit as I read the Word each night right before bed and make God’s words my last thoughts of the day.
I received all of these Bibles as Christmas presents from my husband that I had picked out. So if you’re still making your Christmas wish list, a Bible would make a great gift. And if reading the Bible in a year is one of your goals, I highly recommend a One Year Bible.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12, NIV)
Rest in His presence.
