Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. Habakkuk 3:17-18
Joy is a choice, and some days it is harder to intentionally choose joy, but that’s what God’s Word says to do.
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Merriam defines “rejoice” as to feel joy or great delight. I think the answer to rejoice always is in the rest of the verse.
- “Pray continually” because we need to rely on His strength to overcome our flesh, and it is our flesh that focuses on the negative.
- “Give thanks in all circumstances.” Because we live in a broken world, there will always be things to complain about. But because of the goodness of God, there will also always be things to rejoice over.
“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.” Abraham Lincoln
With our hearts focused on God, we can see the goodness in this world and choose joy. So today and every day let us intentionally choose joy!
Rest in His presence.
