What dreams do you hold close to your heart? Would their worth diminish if you experienced them alone?
“The blessing of dreams fulfilled starts with a shared common vision. … You cannot build unity with your husband when you’re aiming for different visions; eventually your paths will separate.” Jen Weaver, A Wife’s Secret to Happiness: Receiving, Honoring, and Celebrating God’s Role for You in Your Marriage
In 2007 I considered moving to Baltimore when I finished court reporting school. The owner of a firm there spoke to my school and offered a sign-on bonus for agreeing to move there. A soon-to-be graduate took her up on the offer and made in the high five figures and paid off her school loan that first year in Baltimore.
Relocating would have been a fresh start … alone.
Division had replaced the unity Tim and I once shared in our marriage.
It felt like we fought all the time. And I was tired. Tired of fighting. Tired of feeling like a failure as a wife. I thought a fresh start would solve it all.
But the fresh start wasn’t a change of address but a change of heart.
I stopped fighting with my husband and started fighting for my marriage.
I gave up my way and started seeking God’s way. Praying for my husband instead of nagging my husband. Reading books on marriage and applying the truth of God’s Word to my life.
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act (Psalm 37:5 HCSB)
We got that fresh start I wanted. But we did it together. And slowly things changed for the better as we put God at the center of our lives and our marriage.
The dreams we experience together will be the dreams that hold us together.
I have a copy of Jen Weaver’s new book to give away! A Wife’s Secret to Happiness shares eleven powerful, practical blessings that God wants to pour into your lap like sweet spiritual confetti, and the wifestyle habits that will attract or reject this divine provision. You can find more marriage encouragement and connect with Jen here: TheJenWeaver.com.
My own copy of Jen’s book is filled with underlines and thoughts I’m pondering. Because I don’t want to miss any of the blessings God has for me through my marriage.
